Lupita Nyong’o Opens Up About Battling Over 50 Fibroids, Including One the Size of an Orange

Award-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o has opened up about a deeply personal health struggle, revealing that she once battled more than 50 uterine fibroids — including one that had grown to the size of an orange.

The Hollywood star, known for her powerful performances and graceful presence on screen, shared that her experience with fibroids was both physically and emotionally challenging. Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous growths that develop in or around the uterus. While they are common among women of reproductive age, the severity and number of fibroids Lupita experienced made her case particularly intense.

According to her account, doctors discovered that she had over 50 fibroids growing in her uterus. One of the largest measured roughly the size of an orange. Fibroids can vary in size — from as small as a seed to as large as a melon — and in some cases, they can cause significant discomfort, heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, frequent urination, bloating, and fertility complications.

Lupita explained that the condition affected her quality of life. Living with such a high number of fibroids meant dealing with ongoing symptoms that were difficult to ignore. In many cases, women may not even realize they have fibroids until symptoms become severe or are discovered during routine medical examinations.

The actress also highlighted how common fibroids are, especially among Black women, who are statistically more likely to develop them and often at younger ages. Despite how widespread the condition is, conversations around it are still limited, leaving many women to suffer in silence.

Treatment options for fibroids vary depending on the size, number, and severity of symptoms. Some women manage the condition with medication to control symptoms, while others require surgical procedures such as myomectomy (removal of fibroids) or hysterectomy in more serious cases. Lupita did not shy away from discussing the emotional toll that comes with facing such medical decisions.

By speaking publicly about her health battle, Lupita hopes to raise awareness and encourage more open conversations about women’s reproductive health. Her story serves as a reminder that even those who appear strong and confident in the spotlight may be fighting private health battles behind the scenes.

Her decision to share her journey is already inspiring many women to pay closer attention to their bodies, seek medical advice when something feels wrong, and speak openly about reproductive health without shame or fear.

Lupita Nyong’o’s openness not only sheds light on a common yet often misunderstood condition but also reinforces the importance of prioritizing health — regardless of status or success.
