The Managing Director of Builderstech Solution Limited, Agene Johnson Godwin, has been sentenced to 48 years in prison for defrauding more than 5,000 Nigerians of over ₦500 million through a fraudulent investment scheme.
The judgment was delivered by a Federal High Court sitting in Makurdi, Benue State. The presiding judge found the defendant guilty after he was prosecuted on multiple charges related to obtaining money under false pretence and other financial crimes.
According to the prosecution, the convict used his company, Builderstech Solution Limited, to lure unsuspecting members of the public into investing in a scheme that promised high financial returns. Many victims reportedly invested their savings with the hope of earning profits, but the company failed to deliver on its promises. Instead, the funds were allegedly diverted for personal use.
Investigations revealed that thousands of Nigerians from different parts of the country were affected by the scheme. Several victims reportedly suffered significant financial losses after the company collapsed and stopped paying returns.
During the trial, the court examined evidence and testimonies presented by the prosecution, which established that the investment operation was fraudulent. The judge subsequently sentenced the defendant to 48 years imprisonment without the option of a fine, stressing the need to deter others from engaging in similar crimes.
The case highlights the increasing number of investment scams in Nigeria and serves as a warning to members of the public to thoroughly verify investment opportunities before committing their funds. Authorities have continued to urge Nigerians to be cautious and report suspicious financial schemes to relevant agencies.
Law enforcement agencies have also reassured the public of their commitment to tracking down individuals and organisations involved in financial fraud across the country.
