A major traffic and safety incident unfolded on Tuesday at the busy Tincan–Liverpool Bridge in Apapa, Lagos, after a fuel-laden tanker reportedly overturned beneath the bridge, spilling its contents and drawing a large crowd of residents who rushed to scoop the leaking fuel.
According to eyewitness accounts, the tanker lost control while navigating the bridge, causing it to fall and spill a significant quantity of its contents. Within minutes, scores of residents, motorists, and passersby gathered at the scene, many armed with buckets, jerrycans, and other containers to collect the fuel, despite the obvious danger.
High Fire Risk Raises Alarm
The development has raised serious safety concerns, as fuel spills are highly flammable and could easily ignite from a single spark. Observers at the scene reported the strong smell of fuel spreading across the area, while some vehicles and motorcycles continued to move dangerously close to the spill site.
Emergency responders and security agencies were reportedly alerted, as the situation posed a potential fire and explosion risk, especially given Apapa’s history of tanker-related accidents. Residents nearby expressed fear that the incident could escalate into a disaster similar to past explosions recorded in Lagos.
Authorities Move to Secure the Area
Officials from relevant agencies, including traffic authorities and emergency services, were said to be on their way to the scene to cordon off the area, control the crowd, and prevent further scooping. Efforts were also expected to focus on evacuating people from the immediate vicinity and safely recovering the overturned tanker.
Traffic around the Tincan Island and Liverpool axis was heavily affected, with motorists advised to avoid the route as recovery operations and safety checks continue.
