AFCON 2026: Super Eagles Defeat Algeria 2-0, Set Up Semi-Final Clash with Morocco

Nigeria’s Super Eagles have advanced to the semi-finals of the 2026 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco following an impressive 2-0 victory over Algeria in their quarter-final match on Saturday evening. The win secures Nigeria’s spot among the last four teams, keeping their hopes alive for a return to the AFCON final.

Under the guidance of coach Eric Chelle, the Super Eagles controlled large portions of the first half but struggled to convert their dominance into goals. The team created several opportunities, with the most notable chance coming from defender Calvin Bassey, whose strike was spectacularly cleared off the line by the Algerian defense. Despite the strong start, the first 45 minutes ended without any goals.

The breakthrough finally came in the second half, when Victor Osimhen showcased his aerial prowess by rising above the Algerian defenders to head in a precise cross from Bruno Onyemaechi, giving Nigeria the lead. Later in the match, Osimhen turned provider, delivering a perfectly timed assist to Akor Adams, who calmly finished to double Nigeria’s advantage. The second goal effectively sealed the match, sending the Super Eagles’ fans into celebrations.

With this victory, Nigeria will now face the host nation, Morocco, in the semi-finals. The team will be looking to build on their impressive performance and continue their journey toward claiming the AFCON trophy. Nigeria, who have won the tournament three times in the past, will aim to return to the final and bring continental glory back home.

The Super Eagles’ display against Algeria was a mixture of tactical discipline, attacking intent, and clinical finishing, suggesting they could be serious contenders as the tournament moves into its final stages. Fans and analysts alike will now turn their attention to the high-stakes semi-final clash against Morocco, which promises to be an exciting encounter between two of Africa’s top footballing nations.
