AFCON 2025: Super Eagles Beat Egypt on Penalties to Claim Third-Place Finish
The Super Eagles of Nigeria secured a third-place finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after edging Egypt 4–2 on penalties in a tense playoff encounter played in Casablanca.
The highly competitive match ended goalless after 90 minutes, with both African giants struggling to find a breakthrough despite moments of promise. Egypt remained compact in defence, while Nigeria showed more attacking intent, especially in the second half, pressing higher up the pitch and pushing numbers forward in search of a decisive goal.
Nigeria came close on a few occasions, but Egypt’s backline stood firm, forcing the game to be decided from the penalty spot. With no extra time played, attention turned to a dramatic shootout that would ultimately separate the two sides.
In the penalty shootout, the Super Eagles displayed remarkable composure and confidence. Nigeria converted four of their spot-kicks, while Egypt faltered, missing two crucial penalties. The turning point of the shootout came through Nigerian goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, who produced two outstanding saves to swing the momentum in Nigeria’s favour.
Nwabali’s heroics included a stunning save from Egyptian captain and global football icon Mohamed Salah, a moment that sent Nigerian fans into wild celebrations. His calm presence and sharp reflexes proved decisive, earning him widespread praise as the hero of the night.
The victory not only handed Nigeria a bronze-medal finish at AFCON 2025 but also served as a strong statement after narrowly missing out on a place in the final. For Egypt, the defeat was a disappointing end to their campaign, despite their disciplined defensive display throughout the match.
With this win, the Super Eagles conclude their AFCON 2025 journey on a positive note, reinforcing their status as one of Africa’s most resilient and competitive national teams heading into future international competitions.
