Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde explains the real reason behind his political disagreement with Nyesom Wike, his position on the 2027 elections, and concerns about Nigeria becoming a one-party state.
Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has openly explained the roots of his long-standing political disagreement with former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike. According to Makinde, the issue is not based on personal hatred or rivalry but on deep political differences and concerns about Nigeria’s democratic future.
Makinde traced their relationship back to the late 1990s, a period when both men were at very different stages of their lives and careers. He recalled that in 1997, when he was just 29 years old, his engineering company, Makon, secured its first major contract from Mobil. Within a year, the contract earned him $1 million, marking a turning point in his professional journey. At that same time, Wike had just completed law school and was beginning his own path in public service, later becoming a local government chairman.
Despite their different beginnings, both men eventually rose to prominence within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). However, Makinde said their paths began to diverge seriously due to political ideology rather than personal conflict.
The Meeting That Changed Everything
According to Governor Makinde, the real turning point in his relationship with Wike came during a recent political meeting attended by the President of Nigeria, Nyesom Wike, and the President’s Chief of Staff. During that meeting, Wike reportedly made a statement that shocked Makinde.
Wike allegedly told the President, “Well sir, I’ll hold PDP for you in 2027.” Makinde said he was deeply surprised by the remark, especially because, according to him, the President had not requested such a commitment from anyone.
For Makinde, this statement raised serious concerns about the future of the PDP and Nigeria’s democratic system. He viewed it not as a casual comment, but as a signal of a political direction he could not support.
Private Confrontation and Growing Concerns
After the meeting, Makinde said he approached Wike privately to seek clarification. He questioned whether there had been any prior agreement or understanding that led to such a statement. Makinde emphasized that he usually avoids discussing individuals publicly, but he felt this issue was too important to ignore.
He explained that his concern was not about who Wike chooses to support politically, but about the broader implications of such actions on Nigeria’s democracy. Makinde believes political parties should remain independent and competitive, rather than being positioned to serve the ambitions of a single individual or political group.
Governor Makinde made it clear that Wike has every right to support the President’s 2027 re-election bid if he so chooses. However, he strongly insisted that others must also be free to pursue alternative political paths without intimidation or pressure.
He warned that Nigeria must avoid drifting toward a one-party state, stressing that such a development would be dangerous for democracy. According to him, a healthy political system requires strong opposition parties, internal debate, and freedom of choice.
Makinde also emphasized the importance of preserving and strengthening the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He argued that the party must remain focused on its principles and democratic values rather than being reduced to a political tool.
Efforts to Resolve the Issue
The Oyo State governor revealed that after the meeting, he confided in a mutual friend, hoping that Wike might reconsider his stance. He believed that dialogue and reflection could still help resolve the disagreement quietly.
However, when it became clear that Wike was not changing his position, Makinde said he decided to confront the matter directly. He stated that from that moment onward, he made it clear that he would not be part of any political arrangement that compromised his beliefs.
Governor Makinde concluded by firmly stating that he will not support the President’s 2027 bid under the current circumstances. He stressed that this decision is based on principle, not personal conflict.
According to him, just as Wike is free to make his political choices, he too has the right to make decisions guided by his conscience and commitment to democracy. Makinde maintained that Nigeria’s future depends on allowing diverse political views to coexist and compete fairly.
In the end, the governor said his stance is about protecting democratic values, strengthening political institutions, and ensuring that Nigeria does not lose the pluralism that keeps its democracy alive.
