The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has taken the Commandant of the Nigeria Peace Corps, Dickson Akon, and the organisation’s Director of Finance, Omolola Aminat Ahmed, to court over an alleged misuse of funds. The two officials were arraigned on Thursday before Justice H. B. Yusuf at a High Court in Abuja.
According to the EFCC, the case relates to money released for a contract to supply badges to the Nigeria Peace Corps. The commission said the defendants were given N60 million for the contract but allegedly diverted N46 million out of the amount for their personal use.
The first charge states that in 2024, Akon and Ahmed agreed to work together to commit criminal misappropriation, which is an offence under Section 96 of the Penal Code. The second charge accuses them of dishonestly converting part of the contract money, which violates Section 308 of the Penal Code.
When the charges were read to them, both Akon and Ahmed pleaded not guilty. After their plea, EFCC counsel Khalid Sanusi asked the court to remand them in custody until the trial begins. However, their lawyer, Emmanuel Agabi, requested that the court grant them bail. He argued that they were ready to appear in court and would not run away.
Justice Yusuf considered the arguments and decided to grant them bail. He ruled that each defendant must provide N5 million bail with two sureties, also in the same amount. The sureties must be responsible individuals with verifiable addresses.
The court then set a new date for the continuation of the case. The matter was adjourned to February 25, 2026, when the trial is expected to continue and the EFCC will begin presenting its evidence.
This case is expected to draw attention because of the positions held by the accused officials and the amount of money involved. For now, the court will determine whether the allegations can be proven or not.
