Tension in Niger as Armed Terrorists Invade Catholic School, Kidnap Several Victims

An unspecified number of students and staff have been kidnapped from St. Mary’s School, a Catholic institution located in the Papiri community, Agwara Local Government Area of Niger State.

According to sources who spoke to Daily Trust, the abduction occurred during a nighttime raid on the school. A source from a local Catholic church in the state confirmed the incident, revealing that the school is currently compiling its records to determine the exact number of students and staff taken.

The Growing Threat to Schools

This attack is part of a troubling trend in Niger State and other parts of northern Nigeria, where armed groups — often referred to as “bandits” — frequently target schools to kidnap students and staff, often demanding ransom. These raids usually occur at night and have created significant fear among parents and communities.

In February 2021, for example, 42 people, including 27 students and 3 staff members, were abducted from Government Science Secondary College, Kagara in Niger State. While some victims were eventually rescued, these recurring attacks highlight persistent security challenges for schools in remote or poorly protected areas.

Current Concerns

The school is still compiling records, which shows a gap in real-time monitoring of students and staff during nighttime hours.

The motives of the abductors remain unclear, raising serious concerns for the safety and well-being of the captives.

Such incidents are likely to create panic in the Papiri community, potentially affecting school attendance and disrupting education.

What Needs to Be Done

Immediate security intervention to rescue the abducted students and staff.

Enhanced school protection including perimeter fencing, guards, and attendance tracking systems.

Psychosocial support for students, staff, and families affected by the trauma.

Transparent communication from school authorities and the government about rescue efforts and safety measures.

This incident underscores the urgent need for stronger security measures in schools and highlights the growing risks faced by students in parts of northern Nigeria.
