Nationwide Strike Incoming? NLC Warns Tinubu Over ASUU

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has thrown down the gauntlet. President Joe Ajaero has given the Bola Tinubu-led government four weeks to resolve all disputes with unions in the tertiary education sector, warning that failure to act will spark a nationwide industrial action.

Speaking to labour correspondents in Abuja after meeting with leaders of tertiary institution unions, Ajaero criticised the government’s handling of the ongoing ASUU crisis, describing the no-work-no-pay policy as punitive and counterproductive.

He stressed that the NLC will no longer tolerate unfulfilled promises, intimidation, or stalling tactics, saying:
"If after four weeks negotiations aren’t concluded, all unions across the country will act in solidarity to get to the root of this problem. The era of empty promises is over."

With Nigeria’s higher education system already facing prolonged instability, Ajaero’s warning signals a major showdown ahead, as universities remain closed and students’ academic calendars continue to suffer.

SLINZGIST TAKE: The clock is ticking for the government—this isn’t just about ASUU anymore. It’s a warning for every sector: promises must be kept, or the nation’s workforce will respond.
