Tragedy on Ikorodu Road as Speeding Bus Kills Woman and 8-Month-Old Baby

Ikorodu Road Accident Claims Lives of Woman and 8-Month-Old Baby
A heartbreaking road accident on Ikorodu Road, Lagos, has resulted in the death of an adult female passenger and an eight-month-old baby, sending shockwaves through the community and once again drawing attention to the dangers of reckless driving on major highways.

The fatal crash occurred early on Sunday morning opposite Olabode House, along the busy corridor between Anthony and Obanikoro, a section of Ikorodu Road known for heavy traffic and frequent commercial bus activity.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the incident in an official statement signed by the agency’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Adebayo Taofiq. According to LASTMA, the accident involved two commercial buses travelling in opposite directions at the time of the crash.

What Led to the Crash

Preliminary investigations revealed that a red Tata commercial bus, which was travelling from Palmgroove toward Anthony, was moving at a dangerously high speed. The driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, causing it to swerve off its lane and break through the road median.

In the process, the speeding bus crashed head-on into a Volkswagen commercial bus that was conveying passengers from Anthony toward Palmgroove. The impact was severe, leaving both vehicles badly damaged and throwing passengers into chaos.
Fatal Outcome

Sadly, the adult female passenger died instantly due to the force of the collision. The eight-month-old baby, who was also inside one of the buses, sustained critical injuries during the crash and was rushed for emergency attention. Despite efforts to save the child, the infant succumbed to the injuries, confirming the tragic loss of two lives.

Other passengers reportedly sustained varying degrees of injuries and were attended to by emergency responders at the scene.

Emergency Response and Traffic Situation

Officials of LASTMA, alongside other emergency agencies, quickly arrived at the accident scene to rescue victims, manage traffic congestion, and clear the wreckage. The crash caused temporary traffic disruption along Ikorodu Road as officials worked to restore free movement for motorists.

Road Safety Concerns

This tragic incident has once again highlighted the persistent issue of speeding and reckless driving, particularly among commercial vehicle operators in Lagos. Ikorodu Road remains one of the city’s busiest highways, and repeated accidents along the route continue to raise serious safety concerns.

LASTMA has urged drivers, especially commercial bus operators, to obey traffic laws, avoid excessive speed, and prioritize the safety of passengers and other road users. The agency warned that careless driving habits not only endanger lives but also leave families and communities devastated.

Final Note

The deaths of the woman and the infant serve as a painful reminder of how avoidable road accidents continue to claim innocent lives in Lagos. As investigations continue, residents are calling for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations to prevent future tragedies on Ikorodu Road.
